My students need these materials to participate in break out box/escape room activities. I can use these general materials to tie into all of my curriculum all throughout the year.
My science students are awesome! In my 6th grade class, I try to keep them fully engaged with lots of hands-on activities. They come from rural, low income backgrounds with 70% receiving free or reduced lunch. I have found that they learn so much better when they are active and moving while their brains are working. As a young student, I remember not enjoying the subject of science because we simply read out of a textbook.
Once I became a teacher, I vowed to make it my mission to make learning as engaging and hands-on as possible.
I have been able to do this through a variety of methods and I would love to be able to continue giving my students these hands-on learning experiences.
My Project
Been to an escape room yet? If you have, then you know how super fun and engaging these are. Imagine giving that same opportunity to students in the classroom! I would like to be able to purchase the materials needed to make escape room/break out boxes to tie into my science standards. With these materials, I can create 3 different boxes that I can turn into engaging, adrenaline filled activities that will get even the lowest motivated students participating! The purchase will include lock boxes, combination locks, black light markers, black light flashlights, and flash drives to load the science content.
Studies have shown that being able to work successfully in a group is a vital key in being able to succeed in the work force.
Very few careers consist of being totally independent in your job. These breakout boxes will further demonstrate the necessity of group unity when trying to accomplish a goal. Each box will be filled with clues and have combination locks that can only be opened once the students have successfully found the correct code. Students find the codes by working through science content as a group. I know of many teachers who are already using these break out boxes in their classes with amazing results. They report seeing amazing results in student engagement when using these activities. I hope to be able to motivate all of my students especially those who seem to lack that internal motivation. I hope to be able to engage them and make them want to learn science!
