Our school is in a small rural town. A large percentage of our students are eligible for free and reduced-price lunch and come from homes that are economically disadvantaged. There is a population of students from Somalia, Kenya, and Mexico who are learning English as a second language.
Ulitmately we see ourselves as one community working together to educate and cultivate our younger generations.
The high school environment creates opportunities for our students to grow and mature as they learn about themselves and others.
My Project
The materials and supplies that I am requesting will allow me to create and set up "Breakout" Boxes for my students. Breakout Boxes are used throughout education in a variety of ways. Students are given problems to solve that will help them to access number codes, letter cominations and color shemes that are attached to a vareity of locks.
Breakout Box activities promote teamwork, communication, collaboration, and creativity.
They encourgae teamwork, build relationship skills and promote problem solving skills. Solving each step in a vareity of clues will get them one step closer to ultimately opening the "Breakout Box"
In my classroom we are always working to improve self-confidence and self-advocacy skills. This type of activity will help to encourage this as well as critical thinking skills.
