Hooray! This project is fully funded

For the past three Septembers I have taught a bread making unit to my first grade class at Village Elementary School. Each week, a small group of five students mixes the ingredients for a bread dough to be cooked in a bread machine. Groups rotate each week, until the entire class of twenty students has had a turn. Past favorites have been banana bread, five cheese bread, cinnamon raisin bread, and honey yogurt bread. Student enthusiasm is very high for this project. Many of my students are from low-income families, and have never had the experience of baking anything from scratch. Many students have never broken an egg before! Few of them realize how bread is made. Most think food just comes from a store. We discuss measurement, fractions, food groups, where items (like flour), come from, and good nutrition. We also do a "yeastie beastie" science experiment at the beginning of the unit, so students can see how yeast makes the bread rise. I also use literature to complement the unit(The Little Red Hen is a favorite). It is a wonderful lesson with the skills and new vocabulary (for my English Language Learner students) remembered because of the hands-on nature of the project, the aroma of baking bread throughout the day, and the yummy piece of bread served in the afternoon. This year my bread machine quit working. I am asking for your generosity in providing a new bread machine, so future classes (beginning in September 2005) can benefit from the hands-on experience of baking bread. Thank you for considering my request.
