My students are hardworking and very passionate about music making. We are located in a small rural school located in North Carolina. Since I took over in 2013, the program has tripled in size and has become competitive in Marching Band, Concert Band, Jazz Band, the Spring Musical, and Color Guard. Several students have made local, regional, and state honor ensembles in band, jazz, and orchestra. We are looking to acquire new instruments to provide more students the opportunity to participate in band!
My Project
Our students have worked very hard at improving what they can do musically. Over the course of five years, these students have grown from playing at a remedial level with a lack of confidence and knowledge, to playing essential literature that is appropriate at the high school level. They have also made the push into playing collegiate level music, requiring a lot of additional resources like mutes to be able to have success with the advanced literature. Typically, students do not own these items. They are commonly used by multiple students in both concert bands and jazz bands. By having access to mutes, students can correctly master various styles in order to be historically accurate.
