I teach Early Childhood Special Education in a classroom that serves 3 - 6 year-old children with identified disabilities and those "at-risk" for academic failure. While we create a literacy rich environment for the children when they are at school, many of our children lack a literacy rich environment at home. Many of our children live in or nearby a Chicago Housing Authority project. On a daily basis, many of them walk through spaces where violent crimes and drug deals are occurring. While many of them are too young to realize that their education is a ticket out of their current situation, as a teacher I would love to help them create a home library and a love for reading.
The children in our classroom this year have shown a true love for "No, David" by David Shannon and "The Napping House" by Audrey Wood. Most of our children know these books by heart. The texts of these books are simple enough for many of the children to “read?the books to their younger siblings who are not yet old enough to attend school. This will boost the children's self-esteem, introduce their younger siblings to a love of books, and reinforce important emergent literacy skills to our children!
Your donation will help our Early Childhood Special Education and State Pre-kindergarten students create a solid foundation in their home library which will support them and their younger siblings and will hopefully expand and grow as they go through school.
