My Students
My second graders attend the only school in our rural/suburban area. The town is expanding rapidly, but our kids are still geographically separated from many enrichment opportunities. Our school has a decreasing rate of poverty, so funding changes to the Title I program have left us without some needed funding and resources.
My students are bright, energetic kids from a variety of backgrounds. They are eager to participate, learn, and monitor their growth and progress. It is common to hear exclamations of, "Look how much I grew" and "I am proud of my hard work!"
My Project
The Branches reading series provides an excellent bridge between easy readers and chapter books. The high interest stories will keep them motivated to read longer stories. In addition, the Peter H. Reynolds books will be used for lessons in building healthy attitudes about learning.
My students will gain confidence in reading text with gradually increasing difficulty. They will also continue to read and hear the messages of a growth mindset. This includes working hard, learning from mistakes, and striving to improve. These materials will refresh and boost our classroom library so that my students will continue to branch out and grow.
