I work at a high-poverty high school in Vancouver, Washington. My kiddos come from pretty disadvantaged backgrounds without much access to books and great literature. Many of my students work part-time (and sometimes full-time) jobs to support themselves and or their families. On a daily basis I see how much my students want to learn and delve into works of literature but the socioeconomic environment many of them exist in does not provide time or resources for literary scholarship.
My kiddos are funny, thoughtful, and amazing and one of my biggest goals as their 12th grade English teacher is to turn them into life-long readers who have, through the study of literature, created thoughtful and emphatic world-views.
My Project
I teach a 12th grade Sci Fi class and my kiddos are hungering for new texts. Our next unit will examine the zombie phenomenon and my students are beyond excited for it. We will examine the phenomenon for zombie-ism all over the world and then delve into its prominence in popular culture.
These three texts, World War Z, Warm Bodies, and The Zombie Survival Guide, provide a comprehensive and high-interest way into zombie literature.
My kiddos struggle with reading so I try to bring them texts that engage their attention and lead to great conversations are themselves, about the world, and about literature.
