Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in rural northern California at two different elementary school campuses, a K-3rd school, and a 4th-5th grade school. Over sixty percent of our students are second language learners and 70% or more of our students live in poverty. I love coming to work each day because I know that we offer our students a safe and happy place where they can learn and have fun. I also know that our students are eager to learn and experience new things.
When students visit our STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) lab, we focus on hands-on, engaging activities.
We might extract DNA, build bridges, study the parts of a plant, or create art. We also have a makerspace at each campus. This is a place where our students create, communicate, think critically, and collaborate. Students are able to design their own learning. Some students might be learning to sew, while others are building with LEGO bricks or blocks, working with wood, or painting. Our makerspace is a student favorite on both campuses.
My Project
My 1st-3rd graders love hands-on science! Brain Pop Junior is a fun, quick, and engaging way to expose them to science topics like weather, the seasons, color, earthquakes, the rock cycle, and more.
Brainpop offers my students a quick and informative introduction to science topics!
I follow this introduction with more information and a hands-on activity. When studying the phases of the moon in the first grade, we watched the introductory BrainPop video and learned about the phases of the moon. Then as a class, we created a model to explain why the moon that we see changes. The BrainPop videos explain science concepts in a very kid friendly manner.
