Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My English as a Second Language (ESL) students are the hardest-working, most dedicated learners you can imagine. They come from families who have immigrated to the United States. This year, our class is made up of students from Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras, Yemen, Palestine, and Iraq. My students are 5th graders at a high-performing Title 1 school. About 60% of our 650 students learned English as a Second Language.
These students come to school every single day excited to learn and willing to tackle the hard work that is learning 5th grade-level skills while becoming fluent in reading, speaking, listening, and writing in English.
These students are deep thinkers. Many of them have seen and experienced things that many of their American peers cannot imagine. At our school, we provide a safe place for all of our students to explore, learn, and dream. Their parents want the very best for them and have gone to great lengths to make that happen. My goal is to help them achieve these dreams.
My Project
My students are brilliant and hard-working brainiacs, but they are trying to master the English language while also learning 5th grade math, science, and social studies curriculum. These are complex skills that are challenging for native English speakers. BrainPOP and BrainPOP ESL will give my students the opportunity to interact with the learning though engaging videos and interactive quizzes.
Learning 5th grade academic vocabulary is one of the most challenging things for these students- BrainPOP integrates vocabulary seamlessly.
My students have been delighted by the free content offered by BrainPOP. I will utilize BrainPOP in whole class lessons and students can then review the material later for reinforcement. I believe that having access to these 2 sites would really make a difference in their understanding and mastery of these subjects.
