Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine what it would be like to be a child in a classroom where the teacher allows you to work with your friends to build robots. How cool would this experience be if you were an 11 year old? Building robots is a great way to foster creativity and critical thinking skills in students.
My students are 5th and 6th graders who are eager to learn about robotics and technology.
We have one small robotics kit in our class that is currently being used to train the first group of students how to build and program a Brain Bot. Once they have completed their project, they will get into teams of 5 and train other students how to do the same thing. I am hoping to obtain a second set for our class to make the materials more accessible to the students. The students enjoy doing hands on activities and exploring new topics.
They live in a small community with extremely limited resources. Over 90% of the student population receives free or reduced lunches. These students don't have a lot of opportunity where they come from. They need to be motivated to go into a technological field that pays well and will provide them with opportunities to see the world. I believe that robotics is the way to make them successful.
My Project
I want to teach my students about the wonderful world of engineering. It is my goal to get them excited about learning and to encourage them to get involved with robotics and programming at a young age. The resources that I am requesting will change my students' lives because they will be taught valuable skills that they can use in the future to find well-paying technical jobs. If my students receive these materials, they will be able to create and program a working robot. This is not something that kids in our area typically get an opportunity to work with. My studentsÂÂ are so excited about learning that they don't want to leave the classroom. By using the robotics equipment in class, the students will learn how to: build and program a working robot, increase their listening, speaking, and reading comprehension skills. These resources will provide my studentsÂÂ with a learning experience that will last them a life time.
