Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students today need to be taught in an inspiring and interactive classroom. Text books and worksheets are no longer the basis for education, simply because that's not what the working world looks like. Everyday I strive to make our classroom interactive in a multitude of ways.
My fifth grade classroom is a cultural melting pot.
Families come from all parts of the world and many of my students are English Language Learners. The school is Title 1, which means a certain percentage of the students are considered low income. As a community of teachers, we provide a lot of resources for students that they can't find outside of school.
My Project
At my previous job I used BrainPop with great success in my classroom and was disappointed to find out my new school doesn't have access, which is why I'm trying to get my own subscription.
When you have a classroom full of students from different countries, it's important to find different ways to approach subjects. BrainPop is a curriculum based interactive learning tool that covers almost every TEKS we will need to study in the classroom.
And, honestly, I loathe making copies. Not because I'm lazy, but because worksheets are boring. Kids don't learn from worksheets. They learn by doing. BrainPop presents curriculum in an exciting and interactive manner. We break down each video and create different manipulatives based on the learning objective.
My ELL's get the most out of it because they see examples -- visual definitions and colorful illustrations. We all learn better that way.
BrainPop also provides projects and quizzes for each content area.
I'd love to be able to use BrainPop to teach my kids about maps, the US Constitution, literary elements, author studies and so much more.
It's a great teaching tool that is aligned with state standards. And, it makes learning fun!
