This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students range from the ages of 7-8. My school is located in a urban neighborhood. Many of the students live in low income housing. The majority of my students are African American males from single parent households. I also have Hispanic students who have very limited exposure to English language. There's limited parental involvement because their parents work often. All of them receive free lunch and many of them have limited exposure to books and the library.
Three years after a natural disaster occurred in our city, we have finally returned to our home school.
Although many of my students and their families are still renovating their homes and living with other family members, it feels good to finally be back. My students enjoy coming to school and many of them put up a great effort to do their best. They need extra patience and a lot of TLC, something that many of them do not receive often. Our students need a fresh start and reassurance that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
My Project
Students arrive to school daily, eager to learn. Due to reasons beyond their control, many of them may arrive tardy and unable to have breakfast at home. By mid morning, many students are hungry which causes them to become irritable and easily distracted. This can have a tremendous impact on their academics.
Having snacks on hand, will help to energize students so that they are able to focus and complete their assignments.
Without adequate nourishment, students are likely to have issues with concentration and their memory which will affect the overall learning environment.
I would love to see my students exceed the expectations that have been placed upon them.
