The community our school serves is near Bayview-Hunter's Point in San Francisco. The school's demographic is a mix of primarily Latino/a, Asian, and Black.
When I am in my classroom, I am surrounded by a group of energetic and friendly kids.
Many of my students have a great sense of humor, and they make me laugh every day. I also continue to be inspired by their compassion. They notice when their friends are upset and know how to comfort them. They also are highly aware of larger issues in society and talk about how they want to raise awareness of their experiences and issues related to social justice.
They also have a variety of hobbies. Many of my students love to play music and dance. My students also enjoy any opportunity to challenge their teachers to soccer matches or pick-up basketball games.
I was able to buy pistachios for my homeroom earlier this fall, and they loved it! Imagine a room full of students munching on pistachios and bopping theirs heads to music playing in the background while talking with their table about their SMART goals for this semester. Our community was brought together by sharing food and music.
I want to be able to provide food and drinks for students who are not able to otherwise get healthy options during the school day.
A large portion of my students do come from low income families and the school is located in a food desert. The area around my school has mostly corner stores, so many students end up eating chips and other processed food during the day. I already go to a market to get fruit for my students, but I want to make sure I also have options for students who need something more substantial. Many of my students also choose to stay in my classroom during lunch because it is a space that they feel safe, so I want to make sure that they are also able to get something to eat during that time so they can be alert and ready to learn during the second half of the school day.
