Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school presently serves a multi-ethnic student population of 2,339 students, representing 55 countries. The rich multicultural diversity of our school creates a sense of awareness in our students, instilling tolerance, appreciation of other cultures, and respect for one another. Our school serves a significant number of low income, first-generation immigrants. Our Book Club has 28 active members, all of whom are taking honors and advanced placement courses, and have a combined GPA of 3.43.
89% of our members are from minority ethnic backgrounds (29% Hispanic, 44% Black, 7% Asian, 19% White), 44% receive free or reduced lunch, and 22% are former English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) students who completed the program.
They are an amazing group of young adults who are eager to learn and love to read. Despite the challenges each faces day by day they rise above it. Our students demonstrate openness to and empathy for the views, feelings, and perspectives of others.
Their level of enthusiasm and energy is infectious; they actively participant in our meetings, facilitating group discussions and supporting their peers. They ask thought-provoking questions and express their opinions and ideas respectfully. These young people have the potential to do great things.
My Project
Students get easily distracted when they are focused on hunger. Having snacks on hand will help my students stay engaged and maintain the energy they need to be successful.
Our students come from low-income households, and some only get the meals provided by free and reduced lunch and breakfast.
We urgently need funding to purchase snacks (water, chips, bars) for the kids. These snacks will keep them focused on the work they are doing while at school.
With your support, we will be able to give our students the water and snacks that will keep them going during afternoon activities.
