My students are survivors. They live in a community riddled with violence, police abuse, poverty, and strife. They come to school every day, eager to learn, eager to do better and committed to improving their position in life - all of this because of and despite the loss they have endured and the conflicts they have survived.
My students learn from each other and each brings a wealth of invaluable cultural capital and experiential knowledge that informs and benefits the entire classroom community.
They come from a diverse range of cultural, linguistic and ethnic communities, and sometimes their differences drive them apart. More often, they bring them together. Students lean on each other to overcome the loss of friends and family members to violence or incarceration. They look to the future for hope.
My Project
My students often skip breakfast and lunch, and rumbling tummies often lead to fatigue and difficulty focusing at best and disruptive behavior, at worst.
The (mostly) healthy (ish) snacks I've selected will serve as incentives for students who arrive to class with a positive attitude, ready to work and stay on task while engaging with their peers and me in a respectful, safe and professional manner.
They will also serve as fuel for their growing minds and bodies and, with any luck, will keep students motivated and focused on their school work so they have a better chance of succeeding.
