My Project

The addition of healthy snacks in my classroom will enable my students to focus on the complex scientific concepts and be able to process difficult ideas. These healthy options are my way of not only building stronger relationships with my students but also a way to provide them nutrition which most of them are lacking. My students have an urgent need to nutrition in order for them to have optimal educational growth.

Hunger is an everyday reality for my students.

How can we expect students to give school a 100% when they are hungry and do not know when they will have their next meal? I want to ensure that through this project, my students will have the opportunity and security of a healthy option where they will then be able to tackle the high expectations I have for academics.

My school is a migrant Gateway school and we have tripled our population of students who do not have a permanent place to stay and are experiencing food insecurity. Although, many students come from homes with two working parents, a number of them also come from non-traditional households such as group homes, shelters or are moving between homes of different relatives - they are missing the security of having a place to call home. Even when they have working parents, most of them are living below the poverty line and are not sure about their next meal.
