My school is located in a rural, farming area. Many children in the area have deep ties to the town, as their families have been here for generations. A lot of the students have parents that were once students here when the building first opened. The community is very involved and supportive of the school.
The students here are curious and need a chance to explore while learning.
They are eager to please and need the opportunity to know that it's ok to make mistakes in math class as it can lead you to a deeper understanding of the standard. Feeling successful in math class will bring a lot of hope and excitement to the community.
My Project
You've been in a math classroom and can remember trying to find a piece of paper and a pencil to start taking notes. Desperately trying to keep up with the teacher while you solve a problem before someone blurts out the answer.
With this project, my students will have a chance, while working in stations, to use their table as a whiteboard to master our curriculum as they dump their ideas, work out problems, and persevere in solving math problems.
I plan on using the whiteboard paper to cover a table that will be used by students during small group instruction. The variety of whiteboard markers will allow us to brain dump right on the table without looking for scrap paper, pencils, etc. There is also an additional whiteboard in our classroom that students can use when they are working collaboratively on a project since there will be enough whiteboard markers to share. With our 1:1 environment, we can use our technology to take a picture to capture our work as we move on each day.
Being able to have the flexibility to learn math using tools that may seem less traditional to some will allow my students the comfort of knowing they can master the content.
