Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
How different would your world be if no one ever read to you? That is the reality for the students in the high need community in New York where I teach 10th grade to a class of boys.
Now imagine that the school has no money for books. Not only does the school not have money for books, most of the students are on public assistance, so buying a book is not an option.
My students have a hunger for learning, but don't know where to begin. It is because of their poverty that they have not been exposed to reading for pleasure. To add insult to injury, many of the books the school can provide are geared towards girls. My boys are not interested in the same topics as their female counterparts. They are faced with an entirely different set of challenges, unique to their gender. What a shame that books that deal with male issues are so largely unavailable! Maybe if there were more books to hook boys into reading, the graduation rate would grow, they would learn to enjoy the adventures books provide and they would succeed in school, thereby allowing more of them to continue on to college. Instead, they live in a culture geared towards girls, so many of our boys drop out of high school by 11th grade and are unable to pursue successful careers.
This is where you come in. By donating books to my school, you will be providing my boys with an opportunity to read books that deal with the issues they face. You will be teaching them that they are important and that they are valued. You will be showing them the goodness in the world that many have never seen. You will be providing them with a unique opportunity to read thematically-linked books that can then be used for successful and accountable classroom discussion and writing through the use of literature circles. You will be allowing them to practice the skills they will need to succeed in a college classroom. By teaching them to love reading now, college will not only be desirable, but will be attainable.
I hope you will take this opportunity to help out some boys in a poor community in New York. They need to have these books so that they can be the future of their communities. They can't do it without you.
