Have you ever had a classroom filled with wonderful students, most of whom are BOYS? The challenge facing me as their teacher is to find books and activities that pique their interest and keep them engaged. I'm willing to face this challenge head on!
My students are a diverse group of 2nd graders from New Jersey with lots of different learning styles as well as enthusiasm for learning, especially when that learning is fun!
My class is made up of special education students and students needing academic enrichment, as well as many economically disadvantaged students with minimal life experiences outside of their homes and school. To top it off, the majority of them are BOYS! I try my best to provide a learning environment for these students that is safe, nurturing, and engaging, where they feel that it is okay to be exactly who they are and always do their best.
My Project
The two series of books that I am requesting, Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Bone, are both high interest books that may be read by everyone, but specifically appeal to boys. These books, along with the beanbag chairs, will definitely create excitement about reading and make reading time more appealing in our comfy and cozy classroom library.
The magazines are sports themed and will be used during guided reading to heighten engagement while learning. I have used Hot Dots products in the classroom before and my students LOVE them! The Reading Comprehension Quiz Cards set will be used during learning centers after we have learned each skill. The Reading Games Library Interactive CD-Rom games will be used on our SMART-board as a break from the ordinary, an entertaining way to improve our comprehension skills.
Because the majority of my class this year is made up of boys, my approach to teaching them all that they need to know is different.
I'm trying my best but need some extra materials to pique their interest! Therefore, donations to my project will make an immense difference in the lives of my students. Reading is a skill that they will use for the rest of their lives and I aim to instill in them a deep love for it while they are a part of my class.
