Help me give my students more options for prizes when they reach their academic and behavior goals!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
This year, I am teaching mathematics and science to two classes of sixth graders. These students are eager to learn. Ninety-five percent of my students are African American students who receive free lunch. They are bused to and from school. The majority of them have multiple siblings and/or cousins living in the same house.
My students have huge personalities and are driven to make their lives better for themselves and for their families.
I teach skills that these students would not have received if they weren't in my class. We learn computer science, basic computer programming, and how to use technology as a tool in their path towards the future they are working towards.
Now that we are in full swing into the school year, we are still facing challenges! Due to having to consolidate classes, we now have more students in each sixth-grade class.
We have an influx of boys!
As students started to receive rewards from the treasure chest, we realized that we did not have a lot of options appealing to boys! Because of this, I asked my boys for wish lists of things they would like as options. Sports balls, pop-its, fidget spinners, and sports posters were on the top of each list, plus food. "We look at your snowball decorations every day. Can you make us some?" This prompted me to add a snow cone maker and needed accessories to the list as well.
Also, on the list are things they requested for the classroom such as pencils, headphones, a first aid kit, Lysol spray, and wipes to sanitize after each use.
