Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

In today's society boys of all ages are struggling to succeed, and are doing worse in the classroom than they were ten years ago. However, in my 2nd Grade classroom it is my goal to create a "boy-friendly" classroom that inspires boys to reach their fullest potential.

There are so many ways that I, as a teacher, can encourage boys within my classroom and make learning meaningful. One of the many tools to help boys is by providing them with books that interest or spark their desire to read. After doing research on boys, I realized that the books in my classroom library were geared more towards the girls in my class. The boys are limited in the amount of books that truly interest them. In order for boys to increase their reading skills and close the reading gap between genders they need to be exposed to books at their level and interest.

The solution to helping make my classroom more "boy-friendly" is to enrich my classroom library with numerous books that will put smiles on their faces and make them want to read! I currently have some books of interest to boys; however, not all of them are "good fit" books at their variety of levels. I have boys currently reading at the first grade level all the way up to 3rd. In addition, I have often found they get tired of the books I have in my personal library so they are not reading as much. They need some new and engaging texts!

Therefore, with your support, I am asking you to help empower the lives of our boys by placing books in their hands to encourage the love of reading. I want to be the teacher that makes a difference in these boys' lives and help them reach their highest potential in life. Not only will you be helping the 8 boys currently in my classroom but all the boys that walk into my classroom in the years to come!
