I'm very lucky, I have a classroom of unique, intelligent, and inquisitive students. I am a second grade teacher at a high-needs charter school that caters to a community of immigrant and refugee families.
Our community of learners hails from five continents, speaks 10+ languages, and varies in age from seven to nine. The socioeconomic level of my classroom is very low- most of my students receive free lunch and the majority of their parents work full time.
My students deserve the best this world has to offer, and often due to lack of funding for our school, receive mediocre materials. I have trying to build our classroom resources, and have come to donorschoose as a way to supplement our learning materials.
The children can be seen huddling around one large desk- straining to see, pushing, and squawking to be in front. As I demonstrate the lesson, I move the students around and try to make it fair for everyone, but there always seems to be a few students can't see and miss the important results or instructions.
When the students go back to their desks to work with the materials independently, they are sometimes confused and unsure of what to do.
The lingering issue in our classroom is lack of space during teacher modeling and student idea-sharing. This becomes a larger issue in lessons with math manipulatives and during science experiments.
I have strained to find an answer to our problem, and am confident we can prevail!
With the help of one fantastic machine, we all can see the lessons at once!
This miracle solution? An opaque document camera. This equipment will help my students to access experiments on the big screen- it projects anything, even 3-D objects! No longer will my students need to strain across the room to see what I'm doing with base ten blocks- they will see an example on the screen, and can at the same time replicate the learning at their own desks!!
It will be amazing!
The opportunities presented through use of this document camera will be unending, but here are some examples of how we would use it in our classroom:
-Science Experiments (currently we're learning about simple machines- I wish we had this resource to show the tip of the nail- a wedge, the experiments with woods blocks and breaking carrots!)
-Math lessons with manipulatives
-Read aloud on the big screen- everyone can see the words, MAGNIFIED!
-Geography practice
-art projects
And so so much more!
Here is your opportunity to support our learning environment. This document camera will be used daily by my second grade students, and will benefit hundreds of students in the years to come.
Please help us. These students are amazing, inventive, exceptional little people with big hearts. If I could provide these resources on my own I would, but I am unable to provide for them alone. I need your help!
With your support, we can do so many things.
Thank you for considering our proposal and possibly a donation.
Best wishes,
Mrs. P
