Help me give my students the ability to give back to their community. They want to learn skills that they can use when they are released. Knitting machines will allow them to mass produce hats and scarfs.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students LOVE to make art and they love to participate in any project that I present to them. My students are being held in a detention facility and they are considered to be the "bad" kids by most but they are ALL my favorites! My students attend a regular school day Monday through Friday but the rest of the day and the weekends they are left without anything to do besides read paperback books and watch regular television.
My Project
All of my students are confined to this building 24 hours a day and they have all committed some crime to be placed in here. I want them to learn from their mistakes and give back to their communities. During this pandemic, they have had zero visits from family or friends and they are needing some hands-on therapy to calm the stress of being locked up. I want to get them knitting machines so we can mass produce hats to give back to the community. Learning the skill of knitting will help them focus on something other than how much time they have left in here plus they will be completing some service for their community.
