Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students at my school grow up in a tough environment on city streets with a fight first mentality. They often lack the confrontation and deescalation skills necessary to navigate life without getting into physical altercations. It is my hope that providing a boxing program with an emphasis on peace through strength that my students will be less likely to fight and instead look to avoid conflict. It is my belief that the fighting often stems from fear rather than confidence in their ability to handle themselves. I would like to have these discussions and build their physical, mental and social skills at the same time.
My Project
Using the Everlast PowerCore 2 Station Stand and Bag Kit and the Ringside Youth Bag Gloves, the students will be able to choose boxing for an advisory session. These sessions are for small groups of students who will train together and build confidence through strength. The skills they learn will help them avoid physical confrontations while projecting confidence. They will also learn to bond as a team while training. The social skills will benefit the students by creating bonds between teachers and students as well as students and students. Boxing will also be taught as a way to stay fit for the rest of their lives. A full training program that addresses all five components of physical fitness will be incorporated into the boxing workout.
