My students need various parts to complete their orchestral string instruments. Items needed to be able to play include: bows, strings, bridges, and chin rests.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
This year students in the 3rd and 4th grades have the opportunity to learn a string instrument. Unfortunately, there are only 35 instruments available and many of them need new parts or repairs. To ensure that all 90 students can begin this year, we are asking for help! Please help our dreams come true!
The students who will be benefiting from your help are in 3rd and 4th grade at our Elementary School in the Birmingham City Schools District.
These students are very eager to begin their journey in learning to play a string instrument! Our school is a growing school with almost 500 students this year. About 96% of our students participate in free and reduced-price lunch. Our school is a candidate working toward becoming an International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program. Learning to play a string instrument definitely embodies the IB way!
My Project
Many instruments are missing parts and/or some need to be repaired. With your help, we will be able to purchase bows so that students will not only be able to play pizzicato (to pluck the string), but also arco (with the bow). Many instruments have missing and/or broken strings.
Purchasing strings will ensure that each student has 4 strings on their instrument! Sometimes strings break and we need a few extra strings to use for replacements throughout this year.
Several of the instruments are missing bridges. These are vital to each instrument because without them, the strings literally fall flat. Chin rests provide students with comfort while they play their instruments. There are a couple of instruments that have missing or broken chin rests that need to be replaced. This keeps the student's chin/neck off of the instrument, which could rub off the varnish if not replaced.
With your donation you will be improving the instruments in the classroom.
These donations not only help the students for this year, but for many years to come. Students who have the opportunity to learn to play strings gain so much! My students will be able to become more responsible, self -disciplined, and driven. They will also gain important social skills by learning the importance of being in an ensemble, and working together towards a common goal!
