Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are eager learners who do not have the opportunities that their peers at nearby schools have. They get excited to learn when I have new activities and equipment. My goal is to provide activities they will enjoy and live a healthy active lifestyle.
My students love to learn new things and have new experiences, but their families cannot afford these things.
My students would love to learn how to bowl!
While located in an affluent section of the county, the school is noticeably different from all other elementary schools in the area. Approximately 820 students attend our school. Hispanic students are the largest ethnic group accounting for 76% of the population with African American accounting for 15% and White, Multi-Racial, Asian and Pacific-Islander making up the remaining 9%. At the start of the school year, approximately 93% of students qualify for free and reduced lunch. More than half of students (65%) come from households where the home language is something other than English. Within the population 16 languages other than English are spoken. Slightly over 50% of the students receive ESOL services each day as a result of their English proficiency.
My Project
I would like my students to learn how to bowl. It’s a great skill that everyone in their family can participate in! Our students will use this bowling equipment to build sportsmanship, become physically fit, improve their math skills in a real world setting, and improve social skills! This will also give them lifetime skills and experiences they will not get outside of school!
This project will improve our students' self-confidence and self-esteem!
It will also increase their social skills and teamwork as well as giving them more real world math practice! It will also help get the whole family active and spending quality time together.
