My Students

I am the school counselor at a diverse K-6 neighborhood school with about 475 students. We serve kids from families in a wide range of socioeconomic situations. We have students that come from families with difficult family dynamics, immigrants, non-English speakers and also have a program for gifted students, so the range of abilities is vast. We are barely under the threshold to qualify for Title-1 funding. Our resources are stretched thin.

While we have all been doing the best we can amid difficult circumstances, the pandemic has taken an emotional toll on our students.

I have seen an increase in anxiety levels, behavior issues in the classroom, and teachers that are having a difficult time getting students engaged in learning. Our students don't have the coping skills they need to deal with the "real world" problems that the pandemic has forced upon many families that now have to worry about unemployment, food insecurity, and an increase in mental health issues.

My Project

I have seen an increase in anxiety, depression and mental health issues related to the pandemic throughout our school community. I will be using these books for students from kindergarten through 6th grade to help them learn about emotional regulation, coping skills, friendship skills, problem solving, recognizing emotions, and working together. I use books in my classroom lessons, small groups, and individually with student to help teach these concepts to students.

With these new books, my social emotional learning library will be enhanced and will give me the ability to teach additional topics to my students.

In addition, the games will be used in a variety of ways. They will be made available to our families to "check out" for families to play at home together. We want our families, particularly our families that don't have access to resources like this, to be able to spend time together doing something fun while strengthening their relationships. They will also be available to teachers to use in their classrooms for positive reinforcement and incentives, or on days where we have indoor recess.
