Our students come from military families, most of whom travel the world, going from school to school. These students take pride in their nation and military upbringing and crave more informational books on wars, military vehicles, aircraft, and stories of families who are also in their situation.
These students attend a public school located on one of the largest military bases in the country.
Students who attend this school live in military housing villages that surround the campus. The school receives funding due to the overwhelming majority of students coming from low-income families. Students come into the library daily requesting more books on the military, past and present conflicts, military vehicles, and even books that can help them learn about other families affected by the military, deployments, and frequent moving.
My Project
Children in military families are drawn to books on what they know best, what surrounds them every day. Learning about past and present conflicts provides a better understanding of the military's role in securing our freedom. Pride in their military heritage brings out a curiosity to know more about anything related to the military. Many of the students have one or two deployed parents and find comfort in staying connected to their loved ones by reading more on their jobs, purpose, strength, and courage through these books.
Providing more reading material related to one of the most important subjects to these children will encourage a connection with reading and their own lives.
Military-related books are the most requested books in our library's collection and are constantly being checked out by our students. Who knows, one of these books may be the one that draws in a hesitant reader and sparks a love of reading due to the connections that student can make to a subject they know so well- the military.
