My third grade students are energetic, thoughtful, and full of life. They come to school each day with a heart so happy to be at school! They know that my classroom is their safe place where they will always come for love.
Students in my class come from many different backgrounds, from poverty to middle class families, from being in and out of the system to a stable home, from cared about to unconcerned families.
I hope to help their desires for attention and cravings to focus on schoolwork.
My Project
Research shows there is a direct correlation between kids moving in classrooms and their engagement in learning. Subtle movements that flexible seating allows increases student focus. It may seem contradictory, but the more kids are allowed to bounce, the more their brains pay attention because of blood flow to the brain.
The benefits include improved behavior and participation, improved core strength and posture, higher academic performance, less restlessness, calorie burn and energy expenditure, and better attention and focus.
Teaching in a Title I elementary school with high poverty and drug use in the community increases the chances of students with poor nutrition, attention-seeking behaviors, and less attentiveness. I believe more student engagement is a necessity in a small town with children with needs such as heath, nutrition, safety, and security that go far beyond learning. These ball chairs can impact my students' ability to learn tremendously.
