I will have 27 exceptional 3rd Graders this year. I have known most of them since they were in 1st Grade! They all want to learn, explore, and be kind to one another. These traits are hard to come by in 27 students all at the same time. This group is exceptionally close-knit, and I cannot wait to continue their bond as a group.
This past year, I used flexible seating.
My students loved it because they could work around the room to complete their work as desired. This helped create a quiet and comfortable learning environment for all students. Since my students will more than double what I had last year, I am in need of more flexible seating for my incoming students.
Flexible seating will include various heights of working surfaces (i.e. desks lowered to the floor, standing areas, and sitting spaces), pillows to sit or lay on, and a variety of seating to ensure a comfortable learning environment for all learners.
My Project
The balance ball will allow students to move around while they work without constantly sitting in a chair. The balance ball will help students focus on their work because they can bounce, balance, and keep working all at the same time.
Students enjoy the option of sitting in a regular chair, on a balance ball or wobble cushion to move while they work.
The wobble cushion will allow for the same function as the balance ball, but will be used for students to work sitting on the ground at a lowered table or from a chair at a desk.
Movement is a great way to increase student achievement academically and behaviorally because they are focusing their energy through movement while they work. I noticed this past school year when students move around throughout the day or have flexible seating, they are more focused in the classroom.
