Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our 4th grade students are some of the most enthusiastically inquisitive minds we have in our campus. They thrive well on learning through applied or hands on experiences and are always very eager to explore and learn something new.
Being a Title I school with 97% of the school considered as economically disadvantaged, these opportunities for educational exposure may not always be possible for these children, who come from very hard-working families.
However, their thirst for knowledge coupled by well-mannered curiosity to know more, is our daily inspiration to make these opportunities within reach for every 4th grader. We know that with the right guidance, their hearts and minds will surely be bigger than Texas, and the world!
My Project
We have started using gym balls in my classroom three years ago in hopes to make a difference in the students' energy levels and focus. This move really helped my students concentrate on their tasks and look forward to coming to school. Students understand respecting and taking care of their resources and following the rules on safety so they can continue to use these fun chairs. As a result, our scores have been phenomenal compared to more traditional classroom seating. Unfortunately, the original set of 24 gym balls we received from a previous grant has shown signs of over-use from being inflated and deflated for summer storage for the past 3 school years. We need to replace them so future students can continue to reap the benefits of having this innovation in the classroom.
These gym balls create a fun, and inviting atmosphere in our classroom that is proven to improve students' focus, which in return improve their concentration, behavior and overall academic performance.
