Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I want my elementary basketball program to be championship caliber each and every year. With fantastic coaches and committed student athletes, our biggest challenge now is having the resources like equipment to get to the next level.
Students are faced with many challenges before stepping into the classroom.
These students often don't have the supplies they need in school, but they look forward to coming each and every day. In addition to being a classroom teacher, I also mentor my basketball coaches and student athletes as an athletic director. Our student athletes work hard in the classroom and my coaches give 100% of their time and effort to improving our basketball program. We anticipate over 40 students participating on our boys and girls basketball teams as we restart our basketball program following the pandemic.
My school is an Arizona A+++ School of Excellence (awarded in 2010, 2014 & 2018) and a National Title I Distinguished School (2013).
My Project
After a year's hiatus from elementary school basketball, there is once again a sense of hope and excitement as our basketball program returns for 2022! Since all players will have their own basketball to use at practice, the opportunities for growth are tremendous and practice time can be managed more efficiently.
New items also give student athletes a sense of pride and high self esteem.
Playing with confidence in oneself can lead them in the chance to have success. I would like them to acquire the ability to respect what has been provided for them and treat these items with importance, so that they last and are in the same condition when they are passed to the next student.
New basketballs signify a commitment to team, unity, and being the best. The life skills I teach in basketball are skills I want kids to carry with them for the rest of their lives and together we can make this happen for my student athletes.
