My group of second grade students love to get up and move while learning. Most of them are bodily-kinesthetsic learners who need to be moving at all parts of the day to concentrate and stay engaged. A majority of my students come from lower socioeconomic backgrounds and thrive off of movement throughout the school day. Movement helps them stay alert, aware, and engaged. This project can be a way to exert that energy in a positive way and encourage movement!
Sitting completely still is not always a good thing at 7 and 8 years old.
As a 7 and an 8 year old, students' sensory systems are still developing...sitting in a desk all day does not best fit their needs. I have a handful of students who are ADHD and being in motion allows their brains to stay engaged.
My Project
The yoga balls that I am requesting for my students will have a specific place in the classroom. They will remain at their desks for the duration of the year. Students will have access to these materials each and every day. The yoga balls will be used as soon as the students come into the classroom at 7:40 in the morning. Students will be using them during English language arts, math, science, social studies, small group instruction, read alouds, buddy/partner work, etc. I have requested 25 yoga balls so I am able to place five of them at a small group table as well as whole group instruction. These will be used during guided reading during our Daily 5 routine. As a teacher, I have done some research on how effective flexible classroom seating is. I have also researched how ADHD and flexible seating correlate and how it can benefit my students to best meet the needs of their learning styles.
The donations to this project will help keep my students focused during the school day while encouraging movement as a way of engagement.
By using these yoga balls, students will begin to feel themselves focusing and using movement in a positive way to exert the kinesthetic energy during the school day. We will use these yoga balls to enhance our learning and improve student achievement in all subject areas.
