Every morning, we start by saying the pledge of allegiance and a character pledge. We have a 30-minute pull-out class, 30-minute lunch, and 15-minute recess daily. The rest of the day is spent doing class work sitting in chairs. I constantly ask students to sit up and put their feet on the floor.
My students for the upcoming school year have used stability balls as desk chairs last year and have requested their fifth grade teacher use them as well.
The balls have cut down on the number of times a student will want to get up and get a drink or go to the bathroom. They don't get as restless because they can roll side to side and bounce; therefore, they are on-task longer, their concentration is better, and their posture and balance are improved. Using the stability ball will also help incorporate physical activity in the classroom for active learning. The students' teacher from last year said that classroom behavior improved after using the balls. There are also health benefits, too. Sitting on the balls makes you move: the more you move, the more circulation you have, which means better blood and oxygen flow. Also, you are using more muscles, so they become stronger. My school is always looking for innovative ways to improve student achievement.
My Project
The students will use the stability balls as desk chairs. They will learn that there are many benefits of using stability balls and that they can be fun, too. Since these students used them the previous year, they will look forward to using them again. I want to start them off with a positive frame of mind, not, "Do I have to go back to sitting in a chair?"
Having donors fulfill this request will help the mental, physical, intellectual, and emotional learning of my students.
It will show the students that they have some say in their education and that their opinions matter. This will give students a leadership role and a sense of self-confidence.
