Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The incredible learners in my classroom come from very diverse backgrounds and are extremely motivated by learning that relates to real life, lets them participate in hands-on activities, and allows them to grow as students, and as individuals.
The varied backgrounds of my students include a variety of one and two parent homes, extended family guardians, multiple-home situations, and students in foster or group homes.
Each unique student is held to high expectations where he or she can reach their potential academically, behaviorally, socially, and emotionally. Students make an incredible amount of growth in all of these areas during their time in my classroom--achieving more than they ever thought possible!
My Project
Extremely active students need a way to let their energy out so that they can learn! By being able to continually bounce, softly, on a seating ball, they are freeing their mind to take in learning. For students with a moderate amount of energy, being allowed and able to keep their legs in motion by softly kicking on a band attached to their chair, allows them to keep their focus on our lesson. For students who are occasionally distracted, a fidget toy satisfies their sensory needs enough to be able to return their mind to the lesson.
When students' physical and psychological needs are met - it is amazing how much they are able to open themselves up to new ideas and learning!
Not only can these items help students who have higher activity and sensory needs, but these tools will also benefit students who feel stress due to complicated home situations, those who feel anxiety, or even students who simply experience a sleepless night, or a bad morning.
All students in my class will be given the opportunity to experience a variety in seating, as an incentive, or when I notice that certain students could benefit from a psychological "lift." Where my students are emotionally and psychologically is very important to me. Being able to offer students special seating, chair bands, or a fidget that I think will appeal to them and allow them to have a better day emotionally and academically, makes a huge difference in my relationship to my students, as well as their relationship to learning. Learning becomes more positive--and that's what makes lifelong learners and leaders!
