The first thing I noticed about my students this year is how excited they are about learning, they are little sponges! They are a very diverse group, speaking more than 10 different languages. We spend a lot of time getting to know each other in order to build our classroom culture and we all benefit from having people in our class from so many different backgrounds.
My students epitomize the beautiful diversity of the bay area.
The neighborhood in which our school is located is in a bit of transition. It has traditionally been relatively low-income, however, there is now a mix of people from various socio-economic statuses and our school reflects that diversity.
Our school really emphasizes the importance of meeting the students' social-emotional needs as well as their academic needs. We are also a technology magnet school, so even the Kindergarteners learn to code! If you were to step onto our campus you would see that it is a very happy place where interactions amongst students and staff are caring and respectful. Our school is a great place to teach and learn.
My Project
My students love anything that has to do with technology. They have already started learning how to code using Scratch on their Chromebooks. When we were talking about our hopes and dreams at the beginning of the school year, a good handful of my students said that one of their dreams was to learn how to program robots.
You will literally be helping their dreams come true by supporting this project.
Students will work together in partners and small groups to program these Bee-Bots. This will give them a great experience in programming that they will also be able to apply to their Scratch coding and other future projects.
