Have you read the book "Botany of Desire"? I read it and fell in love with Michael Pollan's writing and ideas. The book is about four plants and how humans have co-evolved along with them. It does for evolution what "Fast Food Nation" and "Super Size Me" did for fast food. It makes the subject ("Botany?! Ugh! How boring, right!?") really interesting because it's not just about botany. It incorporates history, economics, and Pollan's personal experiences in his own garden. It makes the subject come alive. And he's a professor at Berkeley, so we're trying to get him to come to Lowell and talk to the kids! I teach 9th/10th grade biology at Lowell High School in San Francisco. We're San Francisco's magnet school, so I can teach at a pretty sophisticated level. The students usually get the biology part, so I have a really great opportunity with my classes to use biology as a vehicle for exploring bigger issues. I want my students to care about the environment and politics. I want to teach my students to think about their place in this world - their responsibilities, their opportunities, their gifts, their relationships. The kinds of things you can't get out of textbooks. I think that books like "Botany of Desire" will help me explore the "human" side of biology.
