Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from high-poverty neighborhoods; many are English Language Learners, but none of these labels change their joy for learning. They are vivacious 5th-8th graders who are excited to master new skills. They support each other in their learning through technology and modeling. I am lucky to have such empathetic young citizens.
Despite the challenges they face in their daily home lives, my students show great perseverance and drive.
Our school motto is "Warriors Always Persevere". My goal is to provide these amazing children the tools they need to persevere and achieve their goals.
My Project
The Boston Museum of Science is a place that makes STEM concepts relatable and exciting to all learners. In addition, the Boston Museum of Science offers live presentations, hands-on activities and exhibits halls that are geared toward Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). My students are very excited to visit the “Conserve @ home” and “Energized” exhibits. These exhibits focus on renewable and nonrenewable resources which directly relates to the content we are currently studying and is also a subject of topical interest. We are also looking forward to stopping by the “Investigation Station”. This hands-on activity allows students to think like a scientist as they collect data and look for answers (a skill we work on year round).
There is great value, and sense of ownership in learning that takes place beyond the classroom walls.
My hope is that this trip will inspire my students. A successful outcome could be anything from a student who leaves with a newfound interest in science to a student who aspires to become an engineer, scientist etc. This will be a trip my students will never forget!
