Mrs. Spackman from Murray UT is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

Born A Crime is an Inspiration!

Help me give my students the book, Born A Crime, to read. It is important for students to see a person that looks like themselves, has faced and overcome obstacles, and achieved success in the modern world.

My Students

My students are an increasingly diverse population suffering from societal problems including: social, behavioral, drug-and-alcohol-related problems that are ever-increasing at a high rate.

38% of our mostly visual-learning students were on free-and-reduced lunch last year, and that figure is steadily increasing each year.

ELL, ESL, SPED, non-English speaking Refugees who have never attended school, and 504 students are also increasing at a rapid rate. We are unable to hire and keep enough Special Ed. teachers to serve these students, and it falls to the regular education teacher to serve all needs.

Marginalized students increasingly feel "less than" when they need to feel "more than" in order to be able to learn.

Despite all the odds stacked against them at home and society, they come to school willingly eager to learn. I want to help them to READ books that matter to them and their own world.

My Project

My students need to read a modern memoir-like, "Born A Crime." Trevor Noah is funny, charming, and articulate. In my class, they will be allowed to choose a title to read in Literature Circles. It is so important that my students read about a young man who looks like them: biracial in a multi-ethnic world. I currently have only one copy of this title.

Trevor Noah was "Born A Crime" according to the laws of South Africa, and wrote about his remarkable experience.

He is an inspiration, and he loves his mother: a great combo. He has faced obstacles and succeeded. We all need more Hope, and this story provides it.
