Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are always eager to learn new information and, for many of them, this is their first time in a structured learning environment. They look forward to Daily 5 Literacy Centers each morning and, as a result of their hard work, have made tremendous progress in language arts.
These kindergarten students attend an elementary school where more than 70% of the student population qualifies for free or reduced lunch.
With a high Hispanic population (74% of the students), most of these students come to school with no exposure to the English language. They have a wonderful curiosity to learn and participate in multiple opportunities for positive social interaction.
My Project
A truly important aspect of kindergarten is encouraging positive social interactions among same age peers. With the focus on increased academic time on task in reading, writing, and math, these students will be able to utilize the playground equipment, such as jump ropes, bean bag toss, and mini bowling ball sets, to engage in social interactions. This is an integral part of practicing and mastering social studies objectives such as taking turns, demonstrating respect for one another, and recognizing individual choice.
The only playground equipment we have is a very small slide, an area of dirt, and a huge concrete area.
The students do not have any other options aside from going down the slide OR chasing one another in a chaotic game of tag. With such an enclosed amount of space, the donations from this project will give them independent choice, opportunities to engage in social interactions that promote turn-taking and respect, as well as raise awareness for the anti-bullying program, Be Kind.
