My students need Chromebooks to support use of a newly implemented learning management system and incorporate computer science fundamentals in their math classroom.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds, but are all faced with the task of excelling at above-level mathematics during their 7th grade year. My students are all identified as academically gifted, but their gifts are not all in math and science.
My students use a variety of manipulatives and technology to make math real to them.
It's not good enough to just practice math skills anymore. Students need a real, tangible connection to the mathematics around them if they are to succeed, and my students work hard to make these connections.
My Project
My students work in 6 groups and I am asking for six ASUS Chromebooks so that each group can have access to dependable technology. Over the past few years, the shared technology in my school has degraded to barely functional. Fortunately, Chromebooks work well within my district's technology framework, and will work well to provide my students with access to needed tools such as Desmos.com for visualizing math, Geogebra.org for online manipulatives, Google Docs for collaborative creation for projects, wescheme.org for learning to code by developing viedo games implementing Algebraic rules, and Tinkercad for creating 3D drawings to be reproduced on our 3D printer.
Without this technological influx, my students will have very limited access to computers in my classroom.
We need daily access to technology so that it becomes an integral part of the classroom, not an awkward visitor. We need to do all we can to allow students to succeed in math and science and to see that computer science is more than just sitting behind a computer screen.
