My Students

This year I switched grade levels and am teaching 1st grade. I am fortunate enough to teach 25 enthusiastic 1st graders. I work at an inner city school where the majority of our students receive free/reduced-price lunch. We have a very high ELL (English Language Learners) and special education population.

A lot of our students have a very inconsistent home life and many times just having them come to school on a regular basis is a celebration.

Before we worry about curriculum, we make sure that their basic needs are met. Despite their difficulties outside of school, the majority of my students come to school excited to learn.

I am always greeted by smiling faces and big hugs, especially after a weekend. I believe it is our duty to provide our students with the best learning opportunities and materials. Unfortunately, our school budget doesn't always allow for that.

My Project

These materials will make a difference in my students' learning by giving them the opportunity to boost their book box choices that they use for their independent reading practice with high interest books by some of their favorite authors. These are series or books with some of our favorite characters that are always filling their book boxes for their read to self time and being shared during their partner time.

My first grade students have been growing immensely as readers and cannot get enough of curling up with their books.

This project would add more variety for my students as they continue to grow.

These books will allow for my students to continue on their independent reading journey with their favorite characters and series that we explore during Reader's Workshop lessons. It will also allow for a bigger selection within the classroom library at their reading levels so my students will all be able to fluently read and comprehend these new tales with some new, and some familiar, characters.
