Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am so proud to teach a group of students that are dedicated to higher education! My students are a part of a rigorous program in which they have the opportunity to earn honors credit, and college credit!
In the heart of Chicago, my students go through a variety of neighborhoods to get to school at 7:45am, every school day.
Many of my kids will be the first in their family to graduate high school and go to college. They are hard working, bilingual, and passionate future leaders. I am equally dedicated to make sure that they get opportunities not normally presented to them, material not normally offered to them, and the support and encouragement they deserve.
My Project
My senior class is currently researching and learning about the Feminist Movement, globally. A recurring theme they have identified is the power and determination of women during very crucial times. We discussed how all people can help empower women, specifically looking at examples in history when this empowerment was so beneficial to our society.
Howard Zinn once said, “Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world.” It was interesting to hear students discuss the small things they felt they can personally do to impact their world.
Feminine hygiene was a topic that was deeply discussed, as some young ladies remarked at the shame they have felt when beginning their cycle at school. "It doesn't have to be this way!" one young lady exclaimed. The class determined that having feminine hygiene products available to women is the first step towards removing the stigma of a natural occurrence in the life of a female.
My students would like to package essential items (chapstick, Kotex pads, and deodorant) that are geared towards women in need. They would first like to have these items available for young ladies in our school community that are currently experiencing personal tribulation, and then expand to women's shelters that surround our community. By starting with 'the small things', I am certain that my senior class will engage in ways to transform their world.
