This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are imaginative, inquisitive, and resilient. They are caring, creative, and love learning, exploring, and investigating. I see their eyes light up when I am able to teach them how to make something they are interested in. Even something as simple as teaching them how to draw their own hairstyle rather than a generic gendered hairdo allows them to feel noticed and feel unique.
They excitedly chatter about their artmaking processes and successes and help each other learn when I give them the freedom to experiment with mixing paint.
My students are enthusiastic when they get to share and explain their artwork to the rest of the class. I teach at a Title I school in North College Hill, Ohio.
My Project
We have a building and architecture center in our art room where students use planning, designing, and problem-solving skills to construct novel structures with a variety of materials ranging from salvaged cardboard to LEGO and Keva Planks.
The goal of this project is to give my students a wider variety of building options, specifically centered on STEAM skills, like learning about gravity, momentum, and simple machines using kits that help teach them skills that they can apply to other materials.
My students often work in pairs and small groups in this center and I'm excited to see them use these resources to learn about physics and teach each other, as well.
