Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from a wide variety of backgrounds and are typical 11 year old kids--full of enthusiasm and excitement for life! I love talking with my students and getting to know them and their hopes and dreams.

60% of my students qualify for free/reduced lunch and 20% of them are English language learners.

I've noticed many of my students have limited access to books out side of school. I want each of my students to have access to books they are interested in, at a level they can read and understand.

My Project

This month I am launching a new unit on informational reading. I am excited about this unit because I believe it is so important for students to learn effective strategies for reading informational and non-fiction text.

So much of the reading done in advanced education and adult life is informational and nonfiction text--it's vital for my students to learn and practice these strategies in books they can read and enjoy!

I have selected a wide range of books for this project to match the wide range of interests and reading levels of my students. When this project is funded, my students will have increased options in our class library to read and learn from informational texts. I am excited to see them grow in this important aspect of literacy!
