My students need exposure to high quality reading intervention and the iPad is a necessary tool for early literacy assessment, instruction, progress monitoring and student practice.
I have the pleasure of working with a group of bright, young students who are at risk of not reaching end of year benchmark goals in their reading development.
After twenty years of reading with children in the classroom, I have learned that if students fall behind in their reading development in the early grades, it becomes exponentially more difficult for them to "catch up" to grade level expectations.
Truly, the "catching up" needs to happen as early as possible!
My Project
As the reading strategist in my school, I will be responsible for assessing and instructing small groups of students for reading intervention. The reading intervention program I will be using is called Burst, by Amplify Education.
An iPad is a necessary component of the Burst Reading Intervention as it is used for assessing, grouping, instructing, progress monitoring and student practice.
I will be assessing and progress monitoring students using an early literacy assessment called mCLASS. mCLASS, is a universal screening and progress monitoring system for reading. The assessment piece drives the grouping of students into small groups of students with similar instructional needs.
The teacher led lesson is accessed through the use of an iPad. Certain parts of the instructional lesson are interactive and need a touch screen device for students to have real time learning experiences. In addition, the practice component of the program is the student application called Boost, which can only be used on a mac device.
The iPad is a necessary tool because although mClass can be used on most new devices with a touch screen, the student practice app and the interactive parts of the lesson can only be used on mac products.
