My students need a way to share what we are learning and practicing in our classroom, with their families at home. They can do this through these hardcover books, story wands and 6 Boomerang Book Bags!
Were you fortunate enough to have a literature rich home and family life? Many students today pick up their first book or hear a story read to them for the first time at school. Love of literature and increased reading ability would go up if students had access to great literature materials at home.
My students are first graders!
First graders are loving, energetic, and have a strong desire to learn. Their biggest challenge in first grade is becoming independent readers. We attend a school in a good community and have parents who are willing to help, but many don't know how. Also, due to recent tornadoes in our area, many students are being displaced and relocated to other schools, as well as currently find themselves without crucial items like books at home. My students would continue to excel if they had access to materials in the classroom that could also travel home with them to encourage a love of learning and literature.
My Project
I am requesting books bags, hardback books, storybook kits, storytelling wands, and response journals. With these materials, I will be able to create six "Boomerang Book Bags" that will circulate among the students throughout the school year. These book bags will travel between student homes and our classroom, focus on one theme or book, and will contain activities for the child to work on outside of school with a family member. Each bag will hold the books, storytelling kits, and story discussion wands I am asking for, as well as teacher created materials that will further extend the student's learning. These bags will allow for at-home practice of skills taught in the classroom. They will also make it possible for parents to know what to do to make their time meaningful. When students spend just ten minutes each night reading at home, their fluency and love of literature increases significantly.
In this day and time, parents and guardians are so busy just providing for their families, they often don't have time to engage with their children about what they are learning in school.
This does not mean they don't want to! Parents are looking for a way to practice skills with their children, as well as foster a love of learning and literature in their homes. Teachers are looking for creative ways to help them achieve that goal. These book bags will be a start in reaching this goal!
