My Students

Music brings a classroom alive in a way that nothing else can. There is no sun that shines as bright as a child when you place an instrument in his or her hands. That is why, every year when I ask my students what I can do better next year, their answer is "Play more instruments!"

I teach in a K-5 public elementary school with a diverse population of about 1,300 students.

My students are generally of low socio-economic status immigrant families from all corners of the globe. The ability to participate in a music ensemble, to play an instrument or sing, is a unique opportunity for many of these students. I have seen music not only enrich their lives, but also give those who may not excel in other areas a chance to shine. This is why, when we live in a world where music is often the first on the fiscal chopping block, it is so important to keep such opportunities alive for our children.

My Project

Modern band class connects students to the music they love most. As they learn to play guitar, bass, and drums they are also learning a second language - music. Communicating in this new way can be a very powerful, therapeutic experience that will inspire a life-long relationship with this art form. But that journey has to begin with small steps. I have requested two sets of musical Boomwhackers and Boomwhacker books with musical arrangements. With Boomwhackers, my students can begin making music together immediately, before we have even discussed things like beat, melody, and instrument technique. Boomwhackers requires no more language or physical skills than the ability to bang a tube against the floor. At a Little Kids Rock conference this summer, a room full of music teachers played along with all manner of popular music, from the Rolling Stones to Bruno Mars, with only two Boomwhackers in our hands. It was magical. I would like to bring that instantaneous magic to my classroom.

My school feels that music is an important part of a child's education and we understand that their musical experience goes beyond holding an instrument and making a sound.

Music actually helps students' brains to develop into better readers, writers, and thinkers. Your donation to this project will not only have an immediate and direct impact on how my students progress as musicians, it will also enhance the development of music students for years to come.
