Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our classroom is a place of community, shared expression, collaboration, mindful practice, and new learning experiences. A lot happens in this classroom beyond reading, writing, and math. My students come from all parts of the community as my particular program is not available in all of our district schools. My program is considered a transitional developmental delay classroom to address the students' social-emotional needs. With this, my students come from all parts of our city and bring with them the experience of their families, homes, and neighborhoods. My students often present with temporary homelessness, childhood trauma, and foster care.
One hundred percent of our students participate in free or reduced-price lunch.
Sometimes, these things enhance our student learning and make it a richer experience for everyone. Other times this brings chaos and conflict. Whatever the students come with, we work together to be a classroom community of learners moving forward to achieve academic and social success.
My Project
Students are more eager to read when they enjoy the books they are reading. Currently, comic books are some of the most exciting books in elementary schools. Comic books combine fun illustrations with dialogue and vocabulary to tell stories and teach students lessons.
These comic books will not only keep my students engaged during reading, but they will encourage them to read outside of class.
It is proven that the more children read, the better they are at reading. And if you can read, you can learn almost anything you set your mind to.
Comic books are no longer a thing of the past. They are back in high demand and better than ever.
My students are visual learners. Comic books are simply easier to engage my unique classroom of boys. Reading is an area some of my student struggle but I have found Comic books engage them. The graphics can easily engage them and I can incorporate writing into their learning as well.
