Ever since schools were closed for students in response to the COVID-19 virus, I have been working to find innovative ways to reach my English language learner (ELL) scholars while meeting their academic, language, and social-emotional needs. I am an English Language Teacher (EL) for the best students in a large public elementary school that has an increasing population of English language learner students each year from all over the world. Our student population is made up of approximately 70% of students who receive free and reduced rate lunches.
Learning is no longer modeled on the traditional classroom but has become digital, individualized, and delivered on smartphones or laptops.
Both students and teachers are learning how to adapt to remote learning and communication. This new dependence on technology for every aspect of education has left many of my parents and students struggling with technological difficulties, as well as coping with the challenges of studying at home and learning how to maintain a formal schedule outside of the school environment. Each week, I provide instruction online using Zoom and post creative and engaging activities and assignments to my website that my scholars can complete online or hand-written.
With Boom Cards, my ELL scholars can continue to learn and reinforce the content, vocabulary, and language that we are studying during our remote learning through a fun and engaging platform! Boom Cards provide students with the opportunity for independence since these cards are easy to use, interactive, and are self-checking. These adaptive cards will allow me as the teacher to tailor instruction to each of my ELL scholar's specific needs, while also monitoring their individual progress with phonics, fluency, reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, Science, and Social Studies!
Working with English language learner students, I feel that it is imperative for their academic success that students are provided visual and engaging resources to help build their language, critical thinking, academic vocabulary, content-area, and overall comprehension skills, especially during distance-learning.
These resources will help my resilient and brilliant scholars to independently practice the content and skills at home since many of their families are at work and are sometimes overwhelmed and still adjusting with the demands of work and the new-normal of remote learning.
